  Female Urology

The urologic needs of women are different from those of men, and as such require special care. Our fellowship-trained staff has expertise in treating problems including urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic prolapse, and recurrent urinary tract infections. Expert evaluation of these conditions includes a complete history and physical exam. Urodynamics (bladder function test) and imaging studies are done to evaluate the urinary tracts. Additional bladder studies such, as cystoscopy may be necessary.

Urinary incontinence is one of the most common female urologic disorders. While there are many types and treatments for incontinence, it is important to understand that no amount of leakage is normal. At Potomac Urology we specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of all types of incontinence. Many of these treatments are minimally invasive, with little pain and recuperation. We spend time to understand the patient’s needs and meet their goals and expectations and can offer a range of treatment options tailored to suit an individuals needs.

Pelvic prolapse is caused by the loss of support of the organs surrounding the vaginal vault. Often times this is referred to as “dropping” of the bladder, rectum, uterus, or vagina. This can lead to feelings of pelvic pressure, bulging, urinary or fecal incontinence, and pelvic pain. Our physicians have been fellowship-trained in order to offer the latest minimally invasive techniques in pelvic floor reconstruction. Often these repairs can be done vaginally, with no visible scars.

In addition, we offer robotic surgery for pelvic floor reconstruction using the Da Vinci robotic system. This revolutionary technique can repair the most extensive problems with minimal discomfort and disruption to a patient’s life. This technique is available at only a few centers in the country and we are proud to bring it to the Northern Virginia area.
